How to Find Government Tenders in South Africa
Where government tenders are published, what you need before you bid, and how SMMEs can find contracts they can realistically win.
Where tenders are published
National, provincial and municipal tenders are published on the National Treasury eTenders portal, and mirrored in departmental bulletins and provincial gazettes. State-owned entities and metros also publish on their own procurement pages.
New Phase Hub pulls live opportunities from the National Treasury eTenders data so you can search by province, category and closing date in one place.
Get compliant before you search
You will need CIPC company registration, an active Central Supplier Database (CSD) registration, a valid SARS tax compliance status, a bank account in the company name and, in most cases, a B-BBEE certificate or sworn affidavit.
Sector-specific registrations such as CIDB grading for construction or NHBRC for housing are often non-negotiable minimums.
Filter for tenders you can actually win
Match the scope to work you have done before, check the CIDB grading or turnover requirement, and confirm you can fund delivery until payment. Bidding outside your capacity wastes weeks.
Diarise the briefing session date. Compulsory briefings that you miss disqualify you regardless of price.
Build a repeatable bid process
Keep a folder of current compliance documents and refresh it monthly. Most late submissions are caused by chasing an expired certificate in the final 48 hours.
Debrief every unsuccessful bid. Procuring entities must give reasons on request, and those reasons are the cheapest business development you will ever get.
