How to Prepare for a Job Interview in South Africa
A preparation routine that works for competency interviews, panel interviews and public sector interviews alike.
Research with purpose
Read the advert line by line and write one example from your experience for each requirement. Then read the employer's latest annual report, strategy or news coverage and identify the pressure they are under. Answers that speak to that pressure stand out.
Structure every answer
Use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result. Keep the result quantified — rand value, percentage, time saved or people affected.
Prepare six stories that can be adapted to most questions rather than memorising twenty answers.
Handle the salary question
Research the band for the role and province, give a range rather than a single number, and anchor it to the scope of the role. If pressed early, it is acceptable to ask what the budgeted range is.
The practical details
Confirm the format, the panel members and whether documents or certified copies are required. For public sector interviews, bring certified copies of qualifications and your ID.
Practise out loud. Reading your answers silently does not prepare you for a panel.
