Skills South African Employers Are Looking For
The capabilities that keep appearing in South African job adverts — and how to build evidence for them before your next application.
Digital and data literacy
Advanced spreadsheet work, basic data analysis and comfort with business systems now appear in adverts far beyond IT roles. Being able to build a report and explain what it means is a differentiator in administration, finance, operations and sales.
Client and stakeholder communication
Written clarity, meeting facilitation and the ability to manage a difficult client conversation are consistently listed. Evidence beats claims: describe a specific relationship you managed and the outcome.
Project coordination
Even junior roles increasingly require the ability to run a workstream: scope, timeline, budget and reporting. A short project management course plus one documented example is often enough to clear the bar.
Compliance and sector knowledge
Sector-specific regulation — POPIA, FICA, OHS, B-BBEE, industry standards — is valued because it reduces risk for the employer. Name the frameworks you have worked under.
Turning skills into evidence
For each skill, write one line with a measurable result and put it in your CV summary. Skills lists without evidence are ignored at screening.
